The PSLE Syllabus is constantly modified and updated. More often than not, parents who have essentially left Primary School for more than a decade suddenly see themselves having to jump right back in tune with age-old knowledge, that is also unfortunately already long outdated due to the many modifications. As such, parents are no longer adept when it comes to the many skills and techniques that their children have to constantly apply in solving PSLE Mathematics questions.
When approached by their children for help with Mathematics problems, they lack the proper knowledge to be able to offer the appropriate assistance. They consequently begin to solve the questions and devise the solutions in their own way, most often with significant deviance from what their children learn in school, thus resulting in incoherence and ultimately, confusion – what we really want to avoid for the sake of our children’s effective learning.
As parents, the desire to help our children is in our nature, yet we sometimes lack the adequate means in effectively doing so, whether knowingly or unknowingly. However, we need to always be mindful that there are things in our children’s lives that we need to personally take charge of, especially when it comes to their education which is essentially part of their growth and upbringing. Issues that hinder our child’s learning come with loss of interest in the subject, when Math starts to feel tiring and mundane, and when solving Math problems becomes pure obligation. This happens when our child’s learning is conveniently left too much in the hands of others – even their tutors. What a child really needs as a motivator for his learning, is a sense of personal connection and enjoyment – a healthy relationship with Mathematics. Thus, we need to always bear the crucial responsibility in being the crux of their education and enrichment. We need active participants in their learning, and as parents, we make the greatest impact.
